Bread & Water Company, founded by Markos Panas in 2011, has grown from a humble beginning at local farmers markets to a beloved establishment in Alexandria. Markos, along with his father John, initially focused on handmade artisan breads and pastries, gaining a reputation for quality and authenticity.
In November 2013, the team expanded with the addition of Noelie Rickey as chef and General Manager. Their collaboration led to the opening of their own store in December 2013 at Belle View Shopping Center. This location quickly became a local favorite, known for its espresso drinks, fresh bread, house-made croissants, and French pastries. The café also offers a delightful selection of breakfast items and fresh soups, making it a versatile spot for any time of day.
What sets Bread & Water Company apart is their commitment to local ingredients and community involvement. They continued to sell their products at area farmers markets, where they traded their breads with local farmers, bringing back fresh produce to incorporate into their menu items. This practice not only supports local agriculture but also ensures that their offerings are fresh and flavorful.
The company saw significant growth in 2019, expanding to twelve weekly farmers markets and servicing over 40 wholesale accounts, including prestigious establishments like Blue Duck Tavern, The Inn at Little Washington, The Nationals Stadium, and the Sfoglina restaurants in DC. This expansion highlights the broad appeal and high quality of their products.
In February 2021, Bread & Water Company introduced Bun Papa, an evening pop-up store within the bakery space, which quickly became known for its incredible burgers. This innovative approach allows customers to enjoy offerings from both Bread & Water and Bun Papa, making it a unique culinary destination.
Bread & Water Company prides itself on a wide range of baked goods, all made in-house with a commitment to using only the best ingredients. Their dedication to freshness and quality is evident in every bite, whether it’s a morning croissant or a lunchtime sandwich. The bakery-café offers an array of breakfast options, including breakfast sandwiches, burritos, waffles, French toast, and pancakes. For lunch, the menu features a variety of sandwiches, wraps, soups, and salads, catering to diverse tastes and dietary preferences.
A wonderful, cozy spot with great food and tons of options, Bread & Water Company does have some limitations in seating. There are a few outdoor tables located on the sidewalk in front of the business, but it is mostly a to-go establishment with no indoor seating available. Despite this, the quality of the food and the friendly service make it well worth a visit.
Overall, Bread & Water Company is more than just a bakery or coffee shop; it’s a community hub that combines excellent food, local produce, and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee, enjoying a leisurely breakfast, or picking up fresh bread for home, Bread & Water Company delivers a consistently delightful experience.
