The definition of “hidden gem”, Charlies Bowl Taqueria isn’t easy to find, even if you’re standing right in front of it. Which is very unfortunate because more people need to know about this place. Started as a food truck, this Mexican restaurant has been opened just over a year and is now starting to draw its well-deserved attention. This place isn’t flashy; it isn’t getting a ton of likes on social media for being photogenic. This place is about the food and only the food. Located in Vienna at the corner of Nutley St. and Maple Ave, it would typically be a prime location. Many well established businesses in the plaza is always helpful. Charlies is still hiding in the very back corner with only a narrow set of stairs leading you the second floor kitchen. That’s really what it is, a kitchen. They do have a couple folding tables; room for maybe 8 people, but mostly it’s a takeout location. I did stay and eat and had a wonderful conversation with the owner, a wonderful person who’s putting his heart and soul into his business. This is why more people need to know about Charlies Bowl Taqueria and similar establishments. We need more people like him. We should be supporting local businesses and that is why I focus on smaller local restaurants. It’s not a large menu. It’s all the usual suspects you’d expect to see at a small Mexican spot. Originally it was about the burritos but recently it’s becoming more known for their tacos and bowls. I tried a few tacos and “Charlies Bowl”. Large portions, great flavor with everything. Made to order, with fresh ingredients, it’s really something worth trying. If you’re in that area of Vienna I recommend seeking out this second floor hidden gem and seeing for yourself. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did and make sure we keep places like this alive and well in Northern Virginia. I say the more the better.
