District Biscuit Company

Near the corner of Mt. Vernon Ave and W Glebe Rd on the northern part of Del Ray, Alexandria sits District Biscuit Company. You can tell from the name what they're known for. What it doesn't tell you is just how good these biscuits are. Started from an idea in 2020, a chef trying to figure out how to navigate in the culinary world post pandemic, the idea of a small biscuit shop took off. The concept was do one thing really well and build a menu around it. That's just what they did. The menu has the usual suspects, chicken biscuit sandwich, bacon egg and cheese biscuit, biscuits and gravy. All the starters you've come to love. Along with some not so familiar faces. Smoke salmon biscuit, grilled cheese biscuit with tomato soup, vegetarian sausage gravy, and one of the fan favorites, french toast biscuit. Doing their spin on french toast using "strips" of their biscuits. They are butter, slightly salty, sweet and flaky. I was really surprised how good the french toast biscuits were. They come with maple syrup but it doesn't need much. The crunchy exterior with the flaky biscuit inside is a great combination. Those familiar with biscuits these would be considered laminated. When prepared they are layered over and over on top of each other. Creating the flaky, buttery texture perfect for pulling apart and adding butter, jam, honey. They make all menu items in house and you can tell. The accompaniments are wonderful as well. They have teamed up with local honey makers who make honey specifically for District Biscuit Company. It's not a big place. Parking lot only has room for a couple of cars. You may not notice if you drive past but you should definitely look for it. If you're craving a biscuit there are only a few places I feel really do it right in Northern Virginia. This is one of them. A local chef putting his heart and soul into a dream. It shows up in the food. Hope you get a chance to try their biscuits. I'm glad I did.
